About the Antminer S9

The S9 is the machine much of today's mining hobby grew up on. Orders opened in May 2016 and it stayed in production for years, which is why S9s still turn up everywhere second-hand. Bitmain sold it in nine hashrate grades from 10 to 14 terahashes a second; this page uses the 13.5 TH/s grade.

By today's standards it is very inefficient: about 100 joules per terahash, nearly six times the electricity an Antminer S21 spends for the same work. At almost any household power price it costs more to run than it is expected to earn, as the table above shows, so the people who keep one running do it for other reasons: the heat in winter, the lottery ticket, or a machine with years of history that still works.

It is also unusually demanding to wire. It runs on 11.6 to 13 volts DC through ten PCIe power connectors, so it needs a separate power supply unit of the right size, and Bitmain rates it at 76 dB, louder than most people want in a room they sit in.

As a solo ticket, one S9 is about eleven Bitaxe Gammas of hashrate for roughly seventy times the power. Its odds are at the top of this page. On SoloLuck it mines to your own Bitcoin address with no fee on the Lite port, the same way a Bitaxe does, and a block it finds pays the whole reward straight to that address.

Quick answers

Can one Antminer S9 find a Bitcoin block on its own?

Yes: every hash is a fresh draw, so any miner can. At today's difficulty one Antminer S9 would expect a block about once every 1,400 years, a 1 in 520,000 chance on any given day, and most never find one.

How much does the Antminer S9 earn a day?

On average, about $0.49 a day at today's difficulty and Bitcoin price, before electricity. At $0.10 per kWh its power costs $3.24 a day, so it nets −$2.75. Solo mining pays that average as a whole block or nothing.

How do I solo mine with a Antminer S9?

Set the pool URL to stratum+tcp://stratum.sololuck.io:3333, the username to your own Bitcoin address (a dot and a worker name are optional) and the password to anything. SoloLuck charges no fee, and a block it finds pays the whole reward straight to your address.

How much power does the Antminer S9 use?

1350 W (+12%), by the figures linked on this page.
